Writing a crossover with Buffy

You've decided to write a crossover with Buffy and one or more of your favorite shows or movies. Here are some tips on making getting people to read your story all the way through.

1)Ask yourself if BTVS can actually fit into the crossover world without to much tampering. An example is Forever Knight and Kindred and how the vampires are portrayed. Buffy vampires act and have different abilities than the two previous shows. You must either find a way to explain why the vampires are different or have them be two different dimensions.

2) Please do not have Buffy or any other characters reveal anything about Slayers. Despite the fact that everyone seems to know that Buffy is the slayer she would not just tell people she just met that she is the Slayer. Show the crossover characters earning Buffy's trust before you have her blab her secret.

3)Avoid altering Buffy's abilities to match or exceed the crossover characters. Let's say you want to cross Buffy with X-men. Try to avoid making her able to take out the entire team of the X-men or giving mountains of mutant power. If you have to up her powers to make her fit into the new universe then you shouldn't try the universe in the first place.

4)The opposite of upping her power is downgrading her power. Please do not show Buffy as not being as capable on the show just to have her saved by your favorite character. An example would be Highlander crossover. While an old immortal should have better fighting skills than Buffy she should still be able to handle him or her for awhile.

5) Please keep Buffy in character. Avoid idealizing her to the point that the reader can't recognizing without someone calling her by name. Buffy is a flawed Human being and should be treated that way.

6) When selecting a crossover please select one that you are very familiar with and not something you think will be cool. If you write a crossover with Buffy and Stargate G-1 and have only seen a couple of episodes the reader will be able to tell. Know what you're writing about.

Please think about these guidelines as you are writing. It will help bring readers back to your stories again and again.
