// Here I am again

In this smoky place

With my brandy eyes

I'm talking to myself

You were the one

You were the one //

"We're going out...need anything?"

He looked up from his book and shook his head. He waited ten minutes after front door had closed before getting up and grabbing his coat. He had to get out of this apartment. Now.

// Here I go again

Looking for your face

And I realize

That I should look for someone else

But you were the one

You were the one //

The dance club had a bar. A very long, dark bar. It was a familiar sight to see a dark haired man at the end closest to the back door, almost completely blending into the shadows. He'd sit there for hours before his eyes lit on someone...and most nights, they didn't. On the nights they did, the waitresses could set their watches on how long it'd take him to get the little blond to leave with him. Never the same girl twice, and he was never in the bar the night after he left with a girl. But it was always a little blond. Always short, petite, delicate but strong looking, with blue eyes and a dangerous smile. And most times, he'd sit in that corner for weeks at a time before they saw him with a girl.

He had very specific tastes.

They had to look like her.

// I'm looking for comfort

That I can take

From someone else

But after all

I know there is no one

That can save me from myself

You were the only one //

She walked in and sat down at the bar, as far from the door as possible, and scanned the dance floor. It was the sixth bar in half as many weeks. She was looking for something specific...or rather, someone. She'd been looking for eight years. She had yet to find him. But she didn't know any other way to find him. He didn't do what he used to. She couldn't look out there.

So, she had to look in here.

Because not looking would kill her.

// Me revoici

Dans ce bar enfume

Avec mes yeux iures

Je me parle a moi meme

C'etait toi

C'etait toi //

There was a girl on the dance floor that was perfect. The waitresses knew the kind...and they knew when he saw her. He always got that same look on his face. Slightly hopeful, slightly needy. It was never there for more than a minute. Then he was charm and smooth and loving and caring. One thing you could say for him...he never hurt the girls. He always told them it was one night, and he was *always* the perfect gentleman, right down to holding the door and walking on the street side back to his apartment. No one ever complained after a night with him.

Except to say that he called out some other girl's name in bed. And it only ever came up because it was the strangest one. None of the girls had ever heard it before.

// Me revoici

Cherchant ton visage

Et je realise

Que je devrais en chercher une autre

C'etait toi

You were the one //

She couldn't just sit anymore...she had to dance. She always did. It was an old automatic habit...he used to get so jealous when she danced with someone else. Going to a dance club and not moving to the music...moving with the other bodies on the floor. Waiting, hoping for that strong arm to tug hers away. For that strong, low voice to ask her what she's doing.

But it never worked. Not ever. And every night, she left on her own, disappointed, tired, and in almost physical pain from his absence.

Who could live like this?

How could she possibly live any other way?

// Je recherche l'affection

Qu'une autre pourrait me donner

Mais apres tout

Je sais qu'il n'y a personne

Personne qui puisse me sauver

Tu etais la seule //

It almost looked exactly like her. He'd think it *was* her, if not for the fact that that would be completely impossible. Night after night he fooled himself, thinking that this time, it could really be her...but it never was. He slowly got up, though, and walked over. One more time. One more try.

One of these times, it would feel like her. One of these times, he'd feel whole.

// I'm looking for comfort

That I can take

From someone else

But after all

I know there is no one

That can save me, save me from myself

You were the only one //

He grabbed her arm, the way he had grabbed so many others, and gently tugged her away, whispering into her ear and asking to buy her a drink. She looked up at him...and they both froze.

The waitresses watched in amazement as, for the first time, he didn't say a word to the girl he left with. Didn't charm her, buy her a drink, or even remember to get his own coat off his chair.

They saved it for him, putting it by his chair the next night he should have been in...but he never came back for it.

END
